First Party Delivery + Third Party Delivery

Hi all,

We were told by our Toast sales reps that it is possible to have our own delivery vehicle in combination with 3rd party delivery. Exactly like how Papa Johns defers their orders to Doordash when they don't have enough drivers.

Is this actually possible? I can't figure it out.

Unless they have changed something recently, this isn’t supported in the POS. You have to either use your own drivers or TDS exclusively.

In general, never trust sales at any company. They rarely know their own product when it comes to details like this.

What you could do if you wanted though is just use DD Drive manually. Set up toast to not do TDS, and then manually dispatch DD using their Web UI. It’s a pain, but that’s the only way to get both right now.

Emily Spickler, Toast District Manager - South Texas and Brock Hargis, our account rep for Reblle at the St Anthony, a Luxury Collection Hotel and for Pumpers, told us to our faces when they were trying to sell us Online Ordering Pro that this was possible to do.

If we did the DD Drive manually, would they still get their 30% chunk? Or would it be a flat rate like with TDS?

It’s the same flat rate cost. Same exact product as TDS (it’s just white labeled). It’s actually cheaper because you won’t pay Toast the extra 0.50c an order on it too, but it’s going to be very inconvenient to have to do regularly. We use it manually sometimes to dispatch a delivery for an error / mistake re-do if we screwed up or customize something very specific.

I see. Is it faster to do from a computer (like a Microsoft Surface Pro with a touch screen running Windows, for example) or faster to do thru an iOS or Android app? If you have time, can you send screenshots or a screen recording of how it's done so I can visualize how much extra time this is going to take our staff?

Man you really cannot trust the sales reps. Not even the district manager either, apparently. They totally lied to our faces about this... said it was 100% possible thru Toast. They also convinced me to go with them over Chowly for their new Online Ordering Pro product, and it's absolutely atrociously designed.

I'm not sure if your suggestion would even work with delivery orders placed thru Online Ordering Pro.

Believe it or not, Chowly is actually willing to have their developers build out a pilot build for a 1st party + 3rd party delivery system JUST for us (and eventually for everyone else) to use. Toast would never do that for one of their customers in a million years.

EDIT—Our educational material states that it is not possible, but many community members have reached out in this thread to explain how this process can be done. The account rep might have known of these workarounds, so they said it could be done.

EDIT- Sorry for all the confusion around this. This is not possible natively through Toast. It's a priority for us to allow this in the future, but it's currently planned for 2025.

Sorry for the delay in response, @mattlawlis. Basically, you'd use your own drivers as default, but if you ever wanted to use DoorDash, you'd dispatch one manually. Your customers would always see the timing and restrictions you have associated with your own drivers. You just... wouldn't send out one of your own drivers in the DD case.

It's a lot of copy/pasting -- prob will take 1 minute per order to copy the address, name, phone number, and order total information from one tab to another. You'd have to do it on a desktop to be efficient. Would take a bit longer if using a touch interface, but I maybe a surface with a big enough screen would be fine. You can technically do it on mobile, but the copy/pasting will be cumbersome.

DoorDash has some somewhat outdated screenshots on their site of what the flow is like. It looks a little more modern than this now, but it's essentially the same flow: https://help.doordash.com/dashers/s/article/DoorDash-Drive-Portal?language=en_US#CreateOrder

I think some of the 3P integrators, like Shipday, can handle this scenario and that's likely the best choice. I think you can even use Toast Online Ordering with those integrators too, but not 100% on that. Likely depends on the integration.

@Rob @mattlawlis I’d still say this is not possible to avoid confusion. You can use a 3rd party integration to do it using an entirely different company’s system, like Shipday, but that’s not a “workaround”. I’d just say, this is not possible to do natively using Toast.
