We use Toast in a grocery retail environment. Currently, scanning the same item multiple times creates a separate line for every scan, each showing a quantity of 1. Repeated scans should automatically increase the quantity on the existing item line.

Separate lines may work in a restaurant environment, but they do not fit a retail checkout when we are scanning multiple identical packaged products. In retail, we need to compare the products and quantities in the customer's basket with what is on the screen.

The attached photo shows seven scans of Tropiway Instant Cocoyam Fufu Flour 680 g at $7.99 each. These should appear as:

Qty 7 · Tropiway Instant Cocoyam Fufu Flour 680 g · $7.99 each · $55.93 total

If there are seven of a product in the basket, I should be able to glance at the screen and immediately confirm seven. Instead, I have to count seven separate rows, even though Toast already has that information.

This also matters when checking whether everything has been scanned. If I have two of one product and one of everything else, one row per product with a clear quantity lets me quickly compare the screen with the basket. Separate entries make missed products and accidental double scans harder to spot. Repeated products fill the screen, push other items out of view, and require unnecessary scrolling. After an interruption, confirming where I left off becomes harder too.

The expected behavior is straightforward:

Scanning the same product again increases its existing quantity, including when other products were scanned in between.

The updated row briefly highlights to confirm that the scan registered.

Items with different variants, modifiers, or pricing remain separate where necessary.

Grouping identical items should be the default retail checkout behavior, not an optional setting cashiers or store operators have to discover and enable. The checkout screen should help us verify quantities and catch errors before payment.

Seven identical scans appear as seven separate quantity-1 lines.
