Gift Cards and Toast Rewards

We are deep in conversation regarding gift cards and points. Guest earn points when they purchase a gift card. Do they also earn points when the pay with the gift card? If so, is there a way to change that in the settings? We have a couple regulars that I feel are earning double points by purchasing a large gift card, and then paying with that same gift card every time they come which earns them double points correct? I thought it was one or the other. Just looking for clarity. Thanks!

They do not earn points when purchasing gift cards, (toast gift cards at least, I don't know about third party) but they can earn points when using the gift card to pay for purchases.

Hey @KT I also wanted to point out that if you have a Toast Loyalty and a customer purchases a Gift card I believe they get loyalty points, and if you have "Allow gift cards to be discounted?" on, then they can use those points to purchase a new Gift card. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by "Points" or not.

In my experience they have not earned points when purchasing gift cards. I was able to find this in toast central.

@KTI can confirm @rcmck is correct. Customers don't earn points for gift card purchases. They do collect points when they pay with a gift card. So there should not be an issue with double earning on points. You can verify on that by checking your customer's rewards transactions.

hey do earn points on gift cards in my system as it prompts them to sign up or adds point if it recognizes there last 4 of the cc can someone help with this

Depending on how you set up your system, customers will be prompted to sign up for rewards after every payment. Can you find a gift card that is recently sold and look into that gift card account’s transaction history to see if points were actually accrued for that gift card purchase?
