Summary
Please add a setting to block or control partial card payments. Today, if a card has insufficient funds, Toast can auto-accept a partial payment. We need the option to decline partials or at least prompt before accepting them. This was available on our previous system as well.
Why this matters
Customers may not have the remaining balance, and the split makes returns messy.
Customers often want to switch to a different tender entirely.
Each swipe costs us money—on tiny partials we’d rather not run the card at all.
This has led to avoidable frustration at checkout.
What we’re asking for (minimal viable)
Setting: “Allow partial card payments” = On/Off (preferably per location/device/order type).
Prompt option: If On, show a modal when a partial is detected:
Accept partial and continue
Decline partial and choose another tender
Thresholds (nice-to-have): Set a minimum partial amount or percentage to accept.
Auto-void behavior: If a partial is declined or the sale is canceled, automatically void the partial auth.
Benefit
Cleaner customer experience, fewer surprise splits, and lower processing costs on low-dollar partials.

I agree with this. It's a major issue already costing my business hundreds of dollars in matter of weeks. This should be addressed immediately as per the yemifromlim's post.

As of 2/2026 this issue still remains. Toast should address this immediately.

This has definitely caused frustration and confusion for our customers and our servers. It would be nice to know an ETA for a feature like this.
