Toast Pay: Split Checks

Ever since the split option was made available when using the QR mobile payment option, we've seen an increase in unpaid checks. I do think it's due to user error, the split checks screen can be a bit confusing. Is this happening to anyone else? And if so, how have you been able to overcome it?

Our servers run 10 table sections, sometimes larger. A guest pays using the QR code on the receipt and leaves before the server can get back to the table.  We've also dealt with upset guests because we mentioned there was still a partial payment due, even though they think they paid for the whole bill.

Hi!

While my establishment does not utilize this feature, I have dug heavily into the topic. Under the Toast Mobile Order and Pay settings > Ordering Experience > you can decide if guests want to start a tab or do pay at you go. If you enable the Tab experience in conjunction with the "Gather Payment Details Upfront" feature, this will ensure you have some form of payment on file. In the case a guest does not close out the other half of the tab, you can still close the check with the card on file.

Hey! Thanks for the insight! We utilize Order & Pay at 4 locations at this time and have Tabs turned on, so we've had better luck with payment when it comes to Order & Pay. Splitting payments using Order & Pay is more straightforward than splitting payments utilizing the mobile payment QR code located on the receipt. We've also decided not to gather payment upfront, but it may be something we decide to do in the future. Currently all of our stores use the mobile QR payment option which is where we are seeing the increase of unpaid checks, because of how the split payment screen is set up.
