I want to do a ‘buy 2 entrees, get $5 off an appetizer. But, here is the situation. ‘Entrees’ is a word used to give the customer an idea what they can get that will apply. In actuality I want to give the discount if 2 from ‘fried rice’ group or 2 from ‘noodles’ group, or 2 from ‘curry’ group are purchased. Additionally, I have different groups in ‘our menu’ and ‘online menu’ and 3rd Party menu. IN ADDITION, i want to give the discount if they purchase 1 from curry group, and 1 from noodles group as well as if they do purchase 2 from a single group. Is there a way to define what in my mind i am calling a ‘supergroup’ that can contain other groups and only exists to do this, and make all this easy, or do I have to describe this in complete detail when building this offer?

You can use menus, menu groups, and items to determine what applies toward a BOGO discount, as well as any combination of those.
Supposing you have a menu group called "noodles", one called, "curry", and one called "rice", this can definitely be done, even if you want any combination of two items from any of those groups. It just needs to be set up that way. It can also be set up to count two items from the "entrees" group, which sounds like something you also want.
Now move on to the "get" section, and set it to apply to specific items/group again. Choose your appetizers group, and set it to be a $5.00 currency discount off the eligible item.
As far as 3rd party, discounts set up in Toast won't be allowed. For Toast online, they are allowed but will need a promo code set up, as auto-applying discounts aren't supported online. If you have different menu groups for online, you'll need to set those up as separate rows in the "Buy Items" and "Get items" section, and ensure the menu structure works for the discount.

Edit: If all of your eligible menu groups ("curry", "noodles", and "rice") exist within one menu called "entrees", and no other groups exist within that menu, then this can be done with one line of the "Buy items" section without worrying about setting up combinations: set that line up as "2 items from entrees".
