Pennies

Now that pennies will stop being produced soon.   Does Toast have a rounding plan in place? Banks are already warning of shortages.

3 ACCEPTED SOLUTIONS

Looks like suggest a work around for now.

It is a Menu Group with 2 non taxable items (+.1 and -.1) a No Print prep station, and a specific Sales Category (like Drinks or Food) called "Cash Adjustments". You would need to add this menu group (to POS only) to all of the Menus in Toast, then cashiers would have to manually add the +1 or -1 items to get to an even number.

Thanks, everyone, for your continued feedback. This is the most recent update that I can provide!

We’re actively tracking requests related to cash rounding and the upcoming end of penny production. Several teams are currently assessing potential solutions. While there aren’t set timelines to share just yet, this work is being evaluated for inclusion on our future roadmap sometime in 2026.
We are planning a Beta Launch in May!

In the meantime, one workaround is to create menu groups/ menu items specifically for rounding adjustments when cash transactions end in amounts that can’t be tendered once pennies are phased out.

For example, staff can manually apply rounding items at checkout such as “Rounding +$0.02” or “Rounding −$0.03” to bring totals to the nearest nickel.

You can find out more on the article attached Configure Cash Rounding During Penny Phase Out

I’ve also shared the relevant Community threads discussing these topics with internal teams so they can see how important this conversation is. Please continue posting your feedback!

I was able to reach out to my team to gather more information. I found out we are actively developing a proper rounding-to-the-nickel solution, rather than relying on workarounds. Below is what we are doing to solve:

  • The solution is currently in active development
  • A pilot program is planned for early April
  • Broader availability is expected later in Q2
  • We’ll proactively reach out to customers who are selected for the pilot

We’ll keep you updated as we progress through the pilot and toward full release!

-EDIT-
We are planning to launch this Beta in May!

Just commenting to follow for updates.

Rob- The pilot program you're talking about, is that different than the "Cash Rounding" built in option?

I asked the AI Chat and got this response-

".....built-in option in Toast is cash rounding (rounding to the nearest cent, then you can round to the nearest five cents on the check).
To set it up:
-Create a non-printing prep station called “No Print.”
-Create one or two menu items: “Cash Rounding (Non-taxable)” with POS names “+1 cent” and “-1 cent,” set to POS only, no taxes, and the “No Print” prep station.
-On a cash check, add the rounding items until the total rounds to the nearest five cents, then take cash payment."

This is the 'work around' that is not very helpful and not at all seamless.  If I am understanding this correctly, Toast is looking to release a Cash Rounding option that will be easier to use.  Hoping that is coming soon!

The pilot program is different; all the information shared so far are workarounds. Thanks for your question!

This is the correct response, we hope that Toast can get the pilot out quickly, and have a final solution before the end of Q2.
