Pennies

Now that pennies will stop being produced soon.   Does Toast have a rounding plan in place? Banks are already warning of shortages.

3 ACCEPTED SOLUTIONS

Looks like suggest a work around for now.

It is a Menu Group with 2 non taxable items (+.1 and -.1) a No Print prep station, and a specific Sales Category (like Drinks or Food) called "Cash Adjustments". You would need to add this menu group (to POS only) to all of the Menus in Toast, then cashiers would have to manually add the +1 or -1 items to get to an even number.

Thanks, everyone, for your continued feedback. This is the most recent update that I can provide!

We’re actively tracking requests related to cash rounding and the upcoming end of penny production. Several teams are currently assessing potential solutions. While there aren’t set timelines to share just yet, this work is being evaluated for inclusion on our future roadmap sometime in 2026.
We are planning a Beta Launch in May!

In the meantime, one workaround is to create menu groups/ menu items specifically for rounding adjustments when cash transactions end in amounts that can’t be tendered once pennies are phased out.

For example, staff can manually apply rounding items at checkout such as “Rounding +$0.02” or “Rounding −$0.03” to bring totals to the nearest nickel.

You can find out more on the article attached Configure Cash Rounding During Penny Phase Out

I’ve also shared the relevant Community threads discussing these topics with internal teams so they can see how important this conversation is. Please continue posting your feedback!

I was able to reach out to my team to gather more information. I found out we are actively developing a proper rounding-to-the-nickel solution, rather than relying on workarounds. Below is what we are doing to solve:

  • The solution is currently in active development
  • A pilot program is planned for early April
  • Broader availability is expected later in Q2
  • We’ll proactively reach out to customers who are selected for the pilot

We’ll keep you updated as we progress through the pilot and toward full release!

-EDIT-
We are planning to launch this Beta in May!

We've decided to optimize our menu pricing to always come out to a multiple of 0.05 after tax is calculated. It will help some, but will still cause some issues when certain items are combined, or when guests are tax exempt. In the meantime we have signage encouraging credit card use, and will round mentally in those one-off scenarios.

"round mentally"? Please, can you share your mental math wizards with me?  I need these employees!

Is the work around still coming in early April.  Avoiding the penny 'work around' would really like this to be seamless for guest and our staff.

Good Morning Rob,

Over the weekend, I was asking the AI if the cash rounding was available yet, and it said "yes".  Here is a section of what it said.

To set up the automated cash rounding (the service charge), do this in Toast Web:
  1. Go to Payments  Cash rounding  Set up cash rounding.
  2. Pick a rounding strategy:
    • Always round up
    • Always round down
    • Round to the nearest nickel
  3. Save your changes.
That’s it. After that, when a guest pays cash, the system will automatically apply a cash rounding service charge to round the change due to the nearest five cents (only when the change isn’t already ending in 0 or 5).

It even gives sources, but I am not seeing this in my options for any location.  Is this still something being worked on or is it something in beta testing that we can join?

Thanks for any help
Ryan

I got the same instructions from Toast AI but it is not an option on my Toast Web yet.  Interested to know when this will roll out
