Traing a new server on inputting orders into the pos

We hire a new server and want them to learn how to use and input items into the pos system WITHOUT it sending any information to the kitchen or counting the information in any way.  We simply want it to be practice.  Is there a way to have a "traing Mode" for the pos?  I am certain we could have the associate sign in under a"server training " job title and then be able to "play" with the system  until they are comfortable and knowledgable enough to go "LIVE"

Hi @Swankee!

Job permission 7.2 Advanced Device Setup allows you to place your system into Test Mode. When a user with this permission is logged in, back out to the main menu and enter Test Mode under Setup. You’ll be able to test taking orders and see how kitchen routing works. You can even take credit cards and fire orders to the kitchen, and nothing is charged or saved to your reports.

Be careful to ONLY use Test Mode when you’re not actively open, because it places your entire restaurant into test mode, and no orders taken on any POS will actually collect any payments or go into your sales.

Toast also has a new browser-based menu testing feature called POS Layout View. I believe it is only available to members of the POS Menu Layout view in Toastweb Beta (though it may be available to more people).

Nick:

Thanks for the information.

I was truly excited to hear we could do this.  You have indicated that it MUST be done while the restaurant is closed and it is a "UNIVERSAL" setting (meaning it is applicable to ALL persons, not just the trainee).  We need to be able to do this while we are operating and the associate is working on learning the system first hand.

Thanks again for the input.

Respectfully,

Shawn

Happy to help! I think this is a good suggestion for a feature request, as I too find it inconvenient that test mode requires no business. But I do have another possible workaround for you:

You can set up a Dining option for “Training” and set up routing rules to ensure all prep stations route to “no print” when that dining option is selected. Then when it comes to processing payments, you either don’t collect payment, or cash them out then void those payments later, or set up an alternate payment method for training to close checks. After training, all the training checks can be filtered and voided.

All of this said, I do agree that a training mode that doesn’t interrupt business would resolve all of this “playing“ with the system. Cheers!
