Completing shift reviews is like mise en place for your front-of-house team. It's vital for ensuring a smooth close-out for the day! Employees are prompted to review any open checks and reconcile cash and tips before clocking out. Here's what you need to know:

Notes: The shift review process can vary depending on the shift review/closeout settings, cash entries, and other information.Managers can view the employees' shifts under Manager Activities > Shift Review.

  •  To access My Account > Shift Review on the POS home screen, you must have at least one of these permissions enabled

Completing a Shift Review

If shift review is required, the following tasks must be completed by the non-manager employees before they can end their shift and clock out:

  • Close all checks assigned to you or your terminal
  • Reconcile cash and tips (collect cash and Tip Out)
  • Clock out or clock out and start a new shift

If shift review is optional, employees can clock out anytime without closing any open or unpaid checks.

A manager is needed to help make sure these steps are completed. You can see the full checklist here: Shift Review Checklist for Employees and Managers.

Note: Some jobs may require employees to clock into their shifts to complete the review. An error message will appear on the Shift Review screen if an employee has not clocked in yet.

How to Close Checks

The first task in shift review is to close all open and unpaid checks. The Checks step displays a summary of checks, including the number of open, paid, and closed checks. The actions available in the Checks step depend on the status of the checks. Employees can choose to close checks, view closed checks, or close the shift (if reviewing a previously closed shift) once all checks have been closed.

To close open and unpaid checks:

  • In the Checks step, select the Close checks button
  • From the Payment Terminal screen, close open and unpaid checks

Note: Any open checks left over from previous shifts will not appear in the shift review. If a check cannot be closed, employees can void the check with a manager's approval or transfer the check to another employee.

How to Declare Cash Tips

To require employees to declare their cash tips as part of the shift review, the “must declare cash tips before clocking out” setting must be selected in the Toast administration back-end.
If cash tips must be declared, the next task for shift review is to declare them.

To declare cash tips:

  • In the Declare cash tips step, select the Declare cash tips button
  • Enter a numerical value on the numerical keypad
  • Select the Declare button to declare the cash tips

Note: If a minimum tip requirement has been configured in the Toast administration back-end, employees must enter a tip amount that meets the requirement before proceeding to the next shift review task.

Completing the shift review in Toast POS ensures checks are closed, cash is reconciled, and tips are declared. Employees can successfully end their shifts and clock out by completing the shift review.
