Incremental Preauthorization Nightmare
‎07-19-2025 11:04 PM
Anyone else have a growing pile of receipts from declined at close checks from incremental pre-auths?
Or even worse, could staff someone part time to answer phones and explain how preauthorizations work.
Toast is by far the best for our operation, but good grief.
Has anyone found a work around to force a lower dollar amount preauthorization?
Young couple comes in on a first date, has $100 in his account. Racks up $60 tab. Dinner goes great, they leave to take their relationship to the next level. (mini golf you heathens) And because of Incremental the bloke has 2 charges, one for $37, and another for $28. NBD except staff goes to close open tab on card on file and now there is only $35 in the account, and the transaction is declined. Customer gets the pre-auth money back and we are left with another check to try and track down., and staff potentially lost out on the tip. 😪
If it happens so often to us, I cant imagine others haven't dealt with this.
What do you do to remedy?
I sat through a demo for a pos company that had a wonderful feature toast should adopt, automatically attempting to collect payment from the card once a day, for 30 days following the patrons visit.
I feel like a grumpy old man typing this. Thank you for reading. 😂

We have this same issue...at table QR code ordering pre-auth is set to .01 cents not the same $25 we set for dine in where our customers order at bar and we run food. The unpaid orders is a nightly problem...hundreds of dollars a month. Toast needs a recharge feature like you said.
