Hi Toast team! 👋
Context: We use the current website-based tools on mobile devices and they work okay for basic retail tasks. But retail markets and shops need faster, rugged, scan-first workflows. A purpose-built handheld would beat mobile web on speed, ergonomics, battery life, and peripherals.
Request: Ship a Toast Handheld (Retail) purpose-built for mixed F&B + retail:
Integrated 1D/2D barcode scanner (hardware trigger + continuous scan) for high-throughput accuracy.
Optional snap-on label printer (shelf/price/barcode labels: 2×1, 1.25×1, etc.).
On-device receiving & counts: scan to receive/adjust/transfer with reason codes and backdating via Historical Inventory Adjustments.
Price check & shelf audit: scan → view/edit price, stock by location, variants (permissioned).
Scan-to-sell in POS cart (supports variants, discounts, taxes).
Returns/exchanges & gift receipts flow on the handheld.
Rugged hardware: hot-swappable battery, drop/IP rating, glove mode, cradle charging.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi + optional LTE; Bluetooth for printers/scales.
Payments: EMV tap/insert/swipe + wallets with customer-facing tip prompts.
MDM & security: kiosk/lockdown mode, role-based permissions, full audit trail.
Why this vs. mobile web:
Speed & accuracy: hardware scanners outperform camera scanning, especially on small or damaged barcodes.
All-in-one: sell, receive, label, and count on one device—no juggling browser tabs or accessories.
Uptime: hot-swap batteries + rugged chassis reduce downtime and breakage.
Lower friction: fewer taps, better ergonomics, and attachments purpose-built for retail.
Acceptance criteria (high level):
Scan barcode → item added to cart (variant selector if needed).
Receive flow: scan PO/items → set qty → optional backdate → on-hand/COGS correct for that service date.
Print shelf/price labels from the handheld.
Perform cycle counts/transfers by scan; exportable variance report.
Works online/offline with safe sync; all actions permissioned and logged.
Thanks! The current website works, but a dedicated Retail Handheld app or v4 would unlock true store-floor efficiency and make Toast competitive for retail-heavy locations.
