Modifier Groups and Modifier Options

Modifiers are used to customize items on your menu by providing additional options. Modifier Groups contain a set of Modifier Options and house these created Modifier Options. Modifier Options are used to change, add to, or further define items being ordered. There are three levels when Modifier Groups can be applied: Group Level, Subgroup Level, and Item Level.

 Modifier Creation

Creating a Modifier starts with creating a Modifier Group, which is done in much the same way as creating Menus, Groups, and Items. Modifier Groups can be added, deleted, renamed, and reordered in the same way as Menus, Groups, and Items. Creating a Modifier must be done in Toast's back-end, and Modifier properties can be configured from the Group and Modifier Group view.

What are Duplicate Modifiers?

Duplicate Modifiers are commonly used in bakeries, coffee shops, bagel shops, wing shops, or BYO-style restaurants. Duplicate modifiers allow you to select multiple flavors with a dozen bagels or doughnuts or select multiple sides within a combo meal.

Updating Properties - Group View

Once Modifier Groups have been created, you can configure the properties of the Modifier Groups from the Group and Modifier Group view. The following properties can be configured:

• Required: Staff and/or guests must make a selection, and they won't be able to send this item to the kitchen without a modifier selection.
• Multi-select: Allows you to select more than one Modifier at a time, such as salad toppings.
• Min # selections: The minimum number of Modifiers that can be selected. Note: This is only available if the Modifier Group is Required.
• Max # selections: The maximum number of Modifiers that can be selected.
• Display Ordering Priority: On printed tickets and KDS, modifier groups will be shown in the order you choose. This is useful if the Item has more than one Modifier Group associated with it. You must add a number to the text field for this setting. Lower numbers are prioritized first, and empty fields are prioritized last.

Updating Properties - Item View

Once Modifier Groups have been created, you can also configure the properties of the Modifier Groups from the Item view. The following properties can be configured:

• Override?: (Optional) Allows you to override the Default Modifier Option if this Modifier Group is already used on your menu. It is common to use this on the Item Level.
• Default: (Optional) Select a default Modifier Option that will automatically be selected when placing an order. The Override? setting MUST be enabled to configure a Default.
• Display Ordering Priority: On printed tickets and KDS, modifier groups will be shown in the order you choose. This is useful if the Item has more than one Modifier Group associated with it. You must add a number to the text field for this setting. Lower numbers are prioritized first, and empty fields are prioritized last.

Re-Using Modifiers

If you have existing Modifier Groups you want to use for a new item, you can add them in the same way as creating new Modifiers. This is useful for streamlining the creation of new menu items or for cross-utilizing Modifier Groups across different items.

Note: Modifier behavior determines how the modifiers affect the base item. There are three modifier behaviors:

• Additive: The Modifier Options are added to the base item.
• Subtractive: The Modifier Options are removed from the base item.
• Replacement: The Modifier Options replace the base item.
