Reading Auto Gratuity isn't explicit

When there is a large party and we add auto-gratuity there is some confusion when presenting the check to the customer.

There are two problems.

  1. Customer needs to be told that there is auto-gratuity added so they don't add additional tips accidently.
  2. When we look at the tab, we don't have a clear idea about what the item cost is and what the Auto Gratuity amount is. Since the Tips is always shown as $0.00 and that confuses us when we just inspeact a check if gratuity was added.

It looks like a better method would be to show the guest with the auto-gratuity added already which must be "greyed" out, so that's not editable. And a new input "Additional Gratuity" This makes it clear to both the customer and the restaurant operations.

I would also prefer to see the total Gratuity in Tips rather than showing 0 in the detail.

For e.g. see attachment. The above is just a suggestion to present it well to the customer and owner. Reduces the interaction with customer. Sometimes customer doesn't pay attention and they get mad that they tipped twice. Some customers want to tip more instead of our standard 18% and this gives a clear communication with them.

Although it looks as if you’re using some sort of digital receipt, and my restaurant uses physical paper receipts, you could still try this and see if it works:

If you go into the settings for receipt setup in Toast Web, there’s an option for ‘Tip Line With Gratuities’ that you can either choose to display as ‘Additional Tip’ or just ‘Tip’

Additionally there’s another option to change the size of the font of the gratuity on the check and I have opted to make ours the largest option just for the sake of transparency.

Hope this helps!

True, we use digital receipts. We only print if the customer asks for it. We also heavily use the "Toast Now" app for checking things out, and showing it explicitly would make this very easy to read from an operations perspective.

I like to go old school and use a highlighter on the gratuity if it has been added to a check. Anything to make it clear that it is already on there.

Usually I will highlight and when dropping it off say "The gratuity has already been added" or something along those lines
