Staff Surfing the Web on Toast Devices

When we came on board with Toast, we were told that only toasttab.com web traffic was allowed on Toast devices, that everything else was blocked for security purposes.  Similar in my eyes as to why Toast Tables was not allowed on Toast devices, that it was a PCI issue.

This summer we had staff surfing the web, even watching international soccer matches, on their Toast devices.

Long story short, we confirmed our Meraki router has only Toast devices, and per Support, there have been updates that removed the blocking of non-Toast websites on Toast devices.  There is no longer a way to control what websites staff is accessing on Toast devices.  I would like to think that merely telling staff not to surf the web is an effective solution, but it's not.  Support advised the only way to 'stop' it is to disable the web browser on the devices and hope the staff isn't smart enough to re-enable it.  The support person said he'd never heard of this being an issue before.

I can't imagine I'm the only one with staff surfing the web...anyone else have any insight?  Has disabling the web browser worked for you?

Thanks!

There is a new device management beta, it doesn't elaborate too much on what can be locked out, but seems promising https://www.toasttab.com/customers/shop/test-kitchen/shop-item-toast-device-mgmt-eap

Update: You can lock it down completely if you want

I signed up, waited till the weekend was over before enabling any of it. Am able to stop them from doing anything at all, other than power off or restart, but you could disable that too if you wanted. Can't open notification shade, so no accidentally turning off WIFI or ethernet when they accidentally open it, can't get to the apps section to open anything, just the option to go to toast or unlock with password you set. Have not seen any undesired side effects yet. Here is a screen shot of the page so you can see what that is like.

Edit: I thought of one potential undesired effect, depending on the level of lock down the handheld swipe to unlock screen goes away completely, personally I thought that was a positive as it is one less step to get to taking an order, but will see if it causes any issues.

That’s exciting to hear! Hopefully it will get out of beta and into gold soon.
