discount

Hello,

I am having trouble setting up my discount promos. We are adding a combo to where if you spend a certain amount or get a regular menu item, you can add on an ice cream for X amount. I have set it up to discount the ice cream added on to the order, but the problem comes that if more than 1 is added to the order then every one is discounted. This is my first issue.

2nd, I am wondering when ordering on the app or online, will this be auto applied or will the guest not be able to see it before they send the order in to get the discount? Would I need to create 2 of the same discount to have a promo code?

Thank you for your help

Assuming I understand your question correctly and the coupon is a separate discount and is not related to the combo discount mentioned in your original post.

You want the coupon to be applied to only one of two desserts (house and premium) in a sequence of either the least expensive item or more expensive item when both are ordered on the same check. There are two things you want to consider:
1. Do customers need to purchase an item and a dessert to use the discount? Or coupon can be used on one dessert item without an additional purchase.
2. Can multiple coupons be used on the same check (3 coupons for 3 desserts on the same check)? Or limited to one coupon per check (3 coupons available and 3 desserts ordered but only 1 coupon are allowed).

Here is an example for a discount when:
a) additional purchase is required,
b) only one coupon is allowed per check,
c) and deal with sequencing.

You probably want to set it up as:
1. BOGO discount type
2. with a purchase of any item or a specific item to use the discount
3. Choose how you want the discount to be applied: first item eligible as input, least expensive, or more expensive.
4. Make sure to set "Eligible of # Get Item" to 1.

If more than one coupon is allowed per check or additional purchase is not required, simply set up a fixed $ off discount with house and premium dessert as the only eligible items and manually apply discount. This won't deal with sequencing so you will need to train your employees to always apply discount to least expensive items first or more expensive items first.

I now see why you and @rcmck said it doesn't work. I didn't turn on the auto-apply setting with the assumption that discount will be applied only when a coupon is presented. With auto-apply enabled, system will apply discount to all checks that satisfy the discount requirement with or without coupon presented to your staff. On that note, it make more sense to manually apply discount only when a coupon is submitted. If a coupon is not required to redeem discount, then enabling the auto-apply makes more sense but there is no workaround to restrict # of eligible item discounted.

It is an interesting discovery that Toast made a change to the discount code due to a recent post saying the BOGO did not work . Before the change, you could actually limit the number of item discounted per check even with auto-apply enabled when the required # of buy item was fixed at "1" (which was an unintentional bug?).

So yeah, manually apply discount so you can still have limit of one coupon per check,
OR change your promotion to no coupon (coupon can still be served as advertisement flyer) required and discount will be applied as long as discount conditions are met.

With multiple items on the same check, I was still able to get only one dessert discounted when applying the BOGO check level discount. How did you apply the discount when you tested it?

here are the screenshots and what pulls up on the terminal. For me it rings up multiple times.

I noticed some changes in the API release notes related to combo, possible some changes coming with the discount in the future.
