tl;dr: Has anyone found a way to remove an automatic discount?
We are leveraging discounts to reduce prices of items during happy hour. Example: $3 off appetizers = Fixed $3 discount on these items. Because this is a standing offer at scheduled times, and because we don't want the server to have to be responsible for providing a "guaranteed discount", we set this as an automatic discount.
So far, no problem. But we want to extend this to DINE-IN customers only. Since Toast doesn't have a Dining Option qualifier on discounts, if a guest walks in and orders an app to go, they will get the discount applied and there is no way to remove it.
Sure, I can select the items and then deselect the discount, but when we navigate to the pay screen, it automatically applies the discount again - and we can't seem to see way to remove it.
Does anyone have a creative workaround? Oh, as I said, we don't want to make it a manual discount. And our pricing structure is Location Specific > Menu Specific already, so we can't leverage time-based pricing.

Sadly nothing that doesn’t require at least *some* server input. My creative solution: either use size-based pricing and create sizes specific to the promotion that are only visible to the POS, or create a separate modifier group only visible to the POS with one no-charge “Happy Hour” option.
I prefer sizes because it’s forced, and the naming appears in-line with the name of the item (even though it’s the same item). For example: “Regular Mozzarella Sticks” and “Happy Hour Mozzarella Sticks”. Whats nice is that you can also use advanced properties to apply menu-based pricing to each size modifier, and set the happy hour sizes to only be visible to the POS.
Either way, set your auto-applying discount to only take off the $3 when the happy hour size/option is selected. Server still needs to tap the correct option, but it’s one less step of manually applying the discount.

Thanks! But I'm already using Location-based > Menu-based pricing. So, sizes are off the table.

Gotcha. In your case then I would try the modifier group right at the top of the item with a single happy hour option. Still not perfect but less of a pain than manually applying the discount.
I’m interested in seeing what anyone else has come up with.

Not sure how you use the modifier option, but I was thinking something similar with a no charge modifier on the happy hour items, set to default modifier so they wouldn't have select anything, then have the discount set to must include that modifier, then just unselect the modifier when you don't want the discount to apply. (this might be exactly how you use it)
